This guide explains what to expect at Solace Spa Scarborough, from the facilities and session format to prices, getting there and similar venues close by, so you can decide whether it suits you before you book.

Solace Spa Scarborough has a traditional sauna: a timber room heated by a stove and stones rather than infrared panels. Temperatures in traditional saunas usually sit between 70 and 90°C, and the heat surrounds you rather than warming you from one direction. Short rounds of around 10 minutes, followed by a cool-down, are the usual way to use it.

For a serious cool-down, Solace Spa Scarborough has an ice bath. Water near freezing takes your breath away at first, which is why venues encourage slow entry and calm breathing. Most people alternate a sauna round with a brief ice bath and a rest, repeating the cycle two or three times.

At Solace Spa Scarborough, sauna access usually comes as part of a wider spa experience, bundled with treatments, a bathing pass or a package. Arrive early to enjoy the heat facilities before or after your treatment, and check whether a robe, towels and slippers are provided. Spa environments are quiet and relaxed, so phones away and voices low.

• Heat rises, so the top bench of a traditional sauna is noticeably hotter than the bottom one. Choose your level accordingly.
• Keep your first ice bath short: 30 seconds to a minute is plenty. Breathe slowly through the cold shock.
• Drink water before and after, skip alcohol, and leave the heat straight away if you feel dizzy or unwell.
• Check what Solace Spa Scarborough provides, such as towels, robes, lockers and toiletries, so you know what to pack.
