Cedar sauna in Thirroul running 50-minute sessions for up to eight people, led by a certified Aufguss master.
Aufguss is a guided sauna ritual from German-speaking Europe. A sauna master pours infusions (often scented with essential oils) onto the stones and uses a towel to circulate the heat in waves around the room, sometimes to music. It is still rare in Australia but growing.
A typical Aufguss lasts around 10–15 minutes. The sauna master explains the ritual, pours several rounds of infusion onto the stones and then waves a towel to push the heat towards the benches. Guests usually sit through the whole ritual and leave together. It is customary to stay quiet during the session, and many people follow it with a cold plunge and a long rest. If you are new to sauna, sit on a lower bench and leave quietly if it gets too intense.
